Valérie Bayol – Multidisciplinary Artist and Sculptor

Valérie Bayol is a multi-talented artist whose artistic range is extremely broad. The people of St. George often affectionately refer to her as “the dollmaker.” She is, in fact, a figure designer, figure maker, sculptor, and storyteller all at once.

In her studio, she creates one-of-a-kind pieces—ranging from animal hand puppets, marionettes, and theater figures to intricately detailed human sculptures, busts, and torsos. Her works are more than just art objects—they are beings with character and soul that radiate vitality and bear Valérie’s unique artistic signature—expressive, emotional, and imaginative.

The Figurart Studio—A World Full of Stories

Her studio is no ordinary creative space, but a place of imagination—it is here that worlds full of fabulous characters come to life: dragons, kings, animals, and creatures that Valérie shapes with her hands and breathes life into.

Her figures are created from scratch: from the first sketch and the modeling clay she makes herself, through the shaping of heads, busts, or bodies, all the way to painting them and designing and sewing their costumes. Using fabrics, wool, feathers, buttons, and various other materials, she gives each figure a distinctive personality that blurs the lines between reality and imagination.

Art and Craft

In her work, the art of handcrafted figure-making, expressive and figurative modelling, and impressive costume design merge with a narrative vision to create a truly unique universe that captivates the audience. Each of her creations is one of a kind, striking a delicate balance between art, craftsmanship and storytelling.

Artistic Style and Working Method

In the creative process, each figure emerges from a carefully thought-out overall concept. Valérie first designs and draws sketches, then makes her own modelling clay from wooden components and shapes it into heads, busts or entire bodies. Once dry, the figures are sanded, polished and, in some cases, painted. In the case of human sculptures, the painting focuses on the eyes and mouth, as the natural texture of the wood moulding compound is to be preserved; animals, on the other hand, are coloured in their entirety.

Next comes the phase of textile design. This results in harmonious compositions and lends the figures expressiveness and vitality right down to the finishing touches. Valérie outfits each figure with costumes, headwear and accessories of her own design – made from selected fabrics, natural fibres, faux fur, curly wool, buttons, feathers, beads and other materials. The result is characters full of vitality and soul.

Art as Narrative

Each figure carries its own story within it. Through facial expressions, posture and subtle details, an emotional connection is forged between the artwork and the viewer. Valérie herself says that she sees her figures not only as works of art, but also as characters with a soul of their own, telling their own stories – sometimes quietly, sometimes expressively, but always full of expressiveness.

Unique sculptures by Valérie

Valérie Bayol’s works draw their vitality from the fusion of different artistic disciplines: her figures are at once sculptures, theatrical figures and imaginative narrative objects. It is this interplay that makes her works so unique.

This fusion of sculpture, figure-making and narrative expression lends her works a special depth. Her artful creations include expressive sculptures and busts that convey powerful emotional impressions. Each sculpture is more than just an exhibit – it is a work of art with character, sculptural presence and vivid expression.

Expressive animal hand puppets for puppetry

Valérie creates animal figures – foxes, hares, bears, donkeys, wolves, giraffes, cats or little mice – whether as hand puppets, character heads or busts, all bearing her unmistakable signature style: humorous, poetic, sometimes mysterious.

In hand-puppet theatre, they unfold their very own magic and, with their subtle facial expressions, invite us to tell stories, discover roles and immerse ourselves in imaginative worlds.

Hand puppets for use in education and therapy

Hand puppet play is highly versatile, with animal hand puppets proving particularly effective in therapeutic and educational settings. Acting as intermediaries, these therapy puppets build trust and create a safe space for self-expression. They help make feelings visible, allow for the playful exploration of inner processes, and facilitate the gentle discussion of difficult topics. They open up a realm of imagination, storytelling, and emotional experience for both children and adults—whether it is an mysterious rabbit, watchful wolf, empathetic giraffe or an articulate orangutan, each figure brings its own unique personality and connects with people in its own special way.

Animal Hand Puppets – A Gift for a Lifetime

As special, heartfelt gifts, these animal hand puppets touch the hearts of people of all ages. They are a wonderful choice for grandparents and parents wishing to give their children or grandchildren something unique and precious, as well as for anyone who enjoys storytelling or even staging their own little plays to create lively, shared moments.

At the same time, Valérie’s handcrafted animal puppets are high-quality art objects with a distinctive, artistic presence; displayed on a wooden stand or stone base, they become expressive, unique pieces that serve as striking focal points.

These animal figures are used in a wide range of settings—from puppetry and education to therapy—where their expressive nature fosters a sense of closeness and trust.

The animal figures can also be displayed as art objects. They are mounted on a wooden stand or a stone base.

Custom Animal Portraits

Her repertoire also includes bespoke creations of beloved pets—such as dog or cat busts or head studies displayed on a pedestal.

Studio Souvenirs

Alongside the artworks, printed items are available as small gifts or souvenirs: her “Puppetart” catalog and striking photographs—presented in mats or frames—serve as keepsakes that carry her distinctive artistic world out into the wider world.

Tucked away on Danziger Straße in Hamburg’s St. Georg district lies a gem that looks like something out of a fairytale: the artist’s studio. Playful little figures—foxes, hares, cats, and frogs—peer out at passersby from the shop window. Almost everyone stops in their tracks, delighted and intrigued by the sight. The creator of these creatures is Valérie Bayol, a native of southern France; she invites us for a tour of her studio and workshop.

Her welcome is warm and open. With contagious energy, she leads me through her studio at a brisk pace—pausing now and then to show off a particular puppet, then darting into the next room to make tea. It makes for quite a challenge when trying to hold a conversation! The French artist is refreshing, and her laughter is contagious. The tour takes us past a vast array of animal figures, busts, hand puppets, and mythical creatures. Everywhere you look, small, curious beings seem to be gazing back, whispering among themselves about the stranger who has entered their realm…(read more)
